Liébana is a fine place to come with a dog, but there are rules worth knowing beforehand and they are not always made clear. This is what we know from living here and from asking directly.
In the Picos de Europa National Park
Dogs must be kept on a lead at all times inside the National Park. This is not a recommendation, it is the regulation, and it makes sense in an area with free-roaming livestock, guardian mastiffs and wildlife.
If you meet a flock, the sensible thing is to shorten the lead, go around the outside and not let your dog approach the mastiffs. They are working.
On the Fuente Dé cable car
- Dogs may only travel in a closed carrier.
- Supplement: €10 return, €6 one way.
- There is a left-luggage point at the top station where you can leave the carrier while you walk in the Puertos de Áliva.
- Breeds classed as potentially dangerous are excluded.
Easy walks to do with a dog
The tracks across the Puertos de Áliva, the paths between the villages of the Camaleño valley and the trail that runs past Redo all work well: they are wide, shaded in places and have water along several stretches. High mountain routes with snow patches or rock steps are not a good idea with a dog.
In summer, set off early. At midday the tarmac and rock burn their pads.
Eating out in Potes with a dog
Several places in Potes allow dogs on the terrace. As the policy changes from one year to the next, the practical thing is to ring ahead. If you like, ask us and we will tell you where we know they are welcome at the moment.
At the house
El Refugio de Redo takes one dog. You rent the whole house, so you share the space with nobody, and the Bajo los Picos path starts right next door. Just say so when you book, or get in touch if you have any questions.
