There is a circular route that leaves Mogrovejo, climbs towards Tanarrio and comes back through Redo. It is called Bajo los Picos and it passes, literally, in front of the house.

It is the walk we recommend to anyone who arrives on their first day and wants to get a feel for the valley without heading into high mountain terrain.

What makes it good

  • It is circular: no need to leave cars in two places or walk the same path twice.
  • It links three stone villages of the Camaleño valley, with their medieval towers and hórreos (raised granaries).
  • The Central Massif of the Picos de Europa is in front of you the whole way, which is where the name comes from.
  • It calls for no technical experience.

Where to start

The natural starting point is Mogrovejo, one of the prettiest villages in Spain and Redo’s neighbour. You can park in the village, though in August it pays to arrive early because Mogrovejo gets a fair few visitors.

If you are staying at El Refugio de Redo you do not need a car: the path runs through the village and you can join it straight from the door.

Before you set off

The route is logged on Wikiloc and AllTrails under the name “Bajo los Picos”. Download the track: there are junctions between farm tracks where it is easy to go wrong, especially on the higher section.

Take water. There are long stretches in full sun, and not every village fountain is drinkable in summer.

With children?

It depends a great deal on their age and pace. There is no objective danger on the route, but there is a fair amount of climbing and it feels long for short legs. If you are coming with children and would like a shorter version, ask us: you can walk just the Redo–Mogrovejo stretch, which is a stroll.

We are putting together a detailed guide with our own photographs of each stretch. If you have specific questions before you come, write to us.
