It rains in Liébana. That is what keeps the valley green, and it is also what ruins plans if you have no alternative ready. These are the ones that genuinely work, all less than half an hour from Redo.
Potes, better enjoyed with an umbrella than under an August sun
The old town of Potes, with the Torre del Infantado and the bridges over the Deva, takes a couple of hours to walk and is full of arcades, shops and places to shelter. A rainy day is, paradoxically, the best day to see it without the crowds.
The Monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana
Five minutes from Potes. It holds the Lignum Crucis and is one of the jubilee sites of Christendom. The visit is entirely under cover and explains a good part of the history of the district.
The orujo distillery at Argüébanes
You can visit the Destilería de Orujo de Liébana at Argüébanes, inside the Camaleño valley itself. Usual hours are 8:00 to 13:00 and 15:30 to 19:00. It is worth ringing ahead to confirm.
Beatus and the books
Liébana is where Beatus of Liébana wrote his commentary on the Apocalypse in the eighth century, the origin of the most spectacular illuminated manuscripts of the European Middle Ages. It is worth reading about before you come: it changes the way you see the landscape entirely.
A long lunch
A properly made cocido lebaniego takes up half an afternoon and is the best possible use of a rainy day. We write about it on the Food & Drink page.
And at the house
The living room has a wood-burning fireplace. Sometimes the best plan on a rainy day in the mountains is not to go out at all.
